Frequently Asked Questions

Ken Cooper Roofing recommends that you inspect your roof two times a year - once during the Spring and again in the Fall.

Modified Bitumen is asphalt that has modifiers added to it to give it plastic or rubber- like properties. The most common types of modifiers being used are APP and SBS. Surfacing of these materials consist of a smooth surface or mineral gravels. Modified Bitumen roof systems consist of one, two or three-ply system.

Residential roofs generally take one to three days unless you roof is substantial in size, then it would require more time.

Although each roof is evaluated on a case to case base, tearing off roofing materials and inspecting the wood substrate for dry rot is always the better way to go for long term performance on your new roof.

The beginning of wood rot may be signaled by a water stain. Under the right conditions, wood rot can spread quickly and cause a great deal of damage. There is no hard and fast time period as each out break is unique. But given the right conditions, dry rot is able to grow surprisingly quickly. Prevention and early repair often require very little time or money. Repairing damage from moisture left to do it’s worst can be very expensive.

Plywood and OSB are made differently. Oriented strand board is made from hear-cured adhesives and wood particles that are arranged in layers that cross. Plywood is constructed from thin sheets of veneer, which are thin layers of wood peeled from a log. In plywood, the sheets are cross-laminated and glued together using a hot press. Due to these construction differences, plywood appears much more smooth and consistent than OSB. but the finished products are very similar in strength and performance characteristics. OSB is considerably less expensive than plywood. Many consider OSB to be a "green" material because the boards are constructed from smaller trees, like poplars.
